Background
GeoSask is a collaborative effort with the Government of Saskatchewan to facilitate the discovery and publishing of Saskatchewan geographic information system (GIS) information and maps.
GeoSask is accessible to executive government, businesses, and the general public. It features free GIS data available from participating Government of Saskatchewan ministries and agencies.
What Is GeoSask?
Built and maintained by Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan, GeoSask is a gateway to web-based Saskatchewan geospatial information and information services. It enables you to discover, view and access local and remote geospatial information and services made available by participating provincial ministries and agencies. If your organization is a source of such information and services it enables you to make your geospatial information and services discoverable, viewable and accessible by others and to restrict access to data based on security privileges.
GeoSask maintains a repository of metadata about the geospatial data or services you are seeking to discover or make available. Each metadata record in the repository describes the nature and scope of a registered data item or service, and provides information that enables you to locate and view each registered item or service within GeoSask. The metadata descriptions also provide the information necessary to access items and services for use within the GeoSask Map Viewer or your own systems.
GeoSask complies with current standards adopted by the Saskatchewan Geomatics Technical Advisory Board including national standards of the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure and Open GIS Consortium standard Web Feature and Web Mapping Services.
GeoSask will continue to evolve and provide access to more information that users can make use of to support decision-making and education.
Data Providers
As of January 2009, GeoSask is populated with data from the following Government of Saskatchewan ministries and Crown Corporations:
- Agriculture - The Ministry of Agriculture has the mandate to foster a commercially viable, self-sufficient and sustainable agriculture and food sector. Working with individuals, businesses, communities, and governments, Agriculture will assist farmers and ranchers, encourage higher value production and processing and promote sustainable economic development in rural Saskatchewan.
- Education - The Ministry of Education incorporates early learning and child care, the PreK-12 education system, and the Provincial Library. By providing the foundation for a cohesive learning system by increasing learning opportunities throughout the early years, child care, and PreK-12, the Ministry strives to make life better for students, families, and communities so Saskatchewan youth can build a better future right here in Saskatchewan.
- Energy and Resources - The Ministry of Energy and Resources co-ordinates, develops, promotes and implements policies and programs of the Government of Saskatchewan that strengthen and diversify the Saskatchewan economy. Energy and Resources is the lead provincial government agency to spur economic growth and development of the province's resource sector, but is not the only ministry involved in economic development. Energy and Resources has a twofold role: to offer direct programs and services to individuals and businesses, and to play a role in co-ordinating economic development activities among other departments and agencies.
- Environment - The Ministry of Environment manages Saskatchewan's diverse landscapes and renewable natural resources in a manner that supports a healthy environment, a growing economy and strong, vibrant communities.
- Health - The Ministry of Health oversees and co-ordinates the delivery of health services in the province. The Saskatchewan health care system comprises many provincial, regional and local organizations working together to ensure we have healthy people in healthy communities. Most services are delivered through the province's regional health authorities (health regions), their affiliated organizations, and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.
- Highways and Infrastructure - The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure has the mandate to optimize transportation's contribution to the economic and social development of Saskatchewan by operating, preserving, and guiding the development of the provincial transportation system and enhancing provincial transportation system assets.
- Information Services Corporation - Information Services Corporation (ISC) of Saskatchewan is the provincial Crown corporation responsible for the administration of land titles, surveys, mapping, geographic information system (GIS) data, and interests in personal property. Formed as a corporation in January 2000, but with a history that pre-dates the province itself, ISC provides valued customer-focused services through all business channels, including the Internet, telephone, fax and in-person at one of eight regional ISC Customer Service Centres located throughout the province. ISC provides everyone doing business in Saskatchewan with around the clock, Internet-based Registry and Land services.
- Saskatchewan Watershed Authority - The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has the mandate to lead management of Saskatchewan's water resources to ensure safe drinking water sources and economic, environmental and social benefits for Saskatchewan people.
