Land Grants

To encourage settlement in the West, the Dominion Government offered a free homestead of 160 acres for a $10 registration fee. In order to receive the land, the settler had to be a male who was 21 years of age or older, or a woman who was the sole supporter of her family.

Before being granted the land, the applicant had to:

  • be a British subject or a naturalized British subject
  • reside on the homestead for a period of time, usually six months of the year for three years
  • make improvements to the land by cultivating at least 30 acres of land, and
  • erect a house worth at least $300

The family farm represents the traditions and heritage that have shaped our province. ISC is proud to sponsor the ISC Century Family Farm Award program that recognizes the many Saskatchewan families that have followed in the footsteps of their ancestors and farmed the same land continuously for 100 years or more.

After these requirements were met, the homesteader was eligible to receive a land grant certificate. Each of these land grants had the official Great Seal of Canada on them.
