General - FAQs

Q. When I save or print a map using the ‘Print’ function, why doesn’t the map fill the screen or page?  Is there anything I can do to fill the page?

A. An important requirement of our customers is that the map image that is saved or printed exactly resembles the map image displayed in the map window (i.e. the main map displayed in Map Search).  The size of the image displayed when saved in PDF or PNG format or printed is based on the size and shape of your browser window (i.e. the window that Map Search is open in).

A helpful hint is to adjust the size of the browser window to resemble the paper (e.g. Letter, Legal, etc.) you would like to print on or that resembles the image dimensions you would like to save.  Changing the size of the browser window will directly affect the size of the output image.

Saving as PDF
The PDF is a fixed page size (8.5” X 11”) with landscape page orientation (i.e. 11” wide by 8.5” tall).  The entire image displayed in Map Search will be reflected in the PDF and will not be distorted, so it will not be stretched or skewed to fill the page.  You can change image dimensions by changing the size of your browser window.  If the image is wider than 11”, the image width will be reduced to 11” and the height will be reduced by the same ratio.  You can also rotate the view within your PDF viewer (or, when printing the PDF, switch to ‘landscape’ orientation) to more closely resemble the map displayed in your browser and then print.

‘Map Title’ and ‘Map Sub Title’ are not currently available in PDFs.

Saving as PNG or Printing
The entire image displayed in Map Search will be saved and includes the ‘Map Title’ and ‘Map Sub Title’.  Printing the saved image will result in the same behavior as saving as PDF if the user does not select “Fit picture to frame” (or similar functionality).  The image will be made to fit onto an 11” X 8.5” page without stretching or skewing the image.

Q. What resolution should I use Map Search at to minimize the use of scroll bars?

A. Customers have told us that maximum Map size is of utmost importance. Map Search is optimized for a 1280 x 1024 resolution. At a minimum, your resolution should be set to 1024 x 768. Anything lower (e.g. 800 x 600) is not supported by ISC and may result in less-than-optimum usablity.

Q. How do I see the scale of the map?

A. The scale of the map that is displayed in the lower left hand corner of the Map Search window. The geographical coordinates of the position of your cursor on the map are also found there beside the scale. These scale and coordinate values will change as you pan and zoom with the map and move your cursor to different locations on the map.

Q. Do I have to enable pop-ups when using Map Search? How do I do this?

A. Yes. Add Map Search to your list of allowable sites for pop-ups. See your pop-up blocker documentation for more information. Map Search uses pop-ups to return Title or Plan search results as well as to display Print Pages so it is of utmost importance to ensure your pop-up blocker allows Map Search to use pop-ups.

Q. What do the numbers on the map mean? How do I read a land description?

A. Visit our The Numbers and How They Are Used and The Title and How to Read It help pages for more information.

Q. What is a tied parcel?

A. Tied Parcels are links between portions of land that appeared on the same title in the old paper-based system but have been separated and distinguished by extension numbers in the LAND System. Tied Parcels indicate that the portions of land are linked to one another and cannot be transferred without the other parcel unless a subdivision is approved.

Q. How do I find a River Lot using the Find option?

When titles to River Lots were converted as part of the conversion to the Land System, the township-range-meridian entered was specific to the particular settlement the River Lot was part of. For example, for the Prince Albert Settlement the township you would enter is 'P', the range is 'A', and the meridian is 'S'. For the St. Laurent Settlement, the township is 'S', the range is 'L', and the meridian is 'S'. In addition to this criteria simply enter the specific River Lot number you are interested in and click the 'Find' button.

Q. What is the Client Reference Number feature and how do I use it.

A. The Client Reference Number allows you to attach your own client reference number from your office files to the purchase transaction. This will assist you in reconciling your monthly account statements with individual title and plan search charges.
